Mayor Mindy O’Neall Announces Fairbanks Mental Health Awareness Community Gathering
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FAIRBANKS, Alaska — On May 29, the City of Fairbanks will host a Mental Health Awareness community gathering, focused on compassion, awareness, recovery, and action. The event will take place at City Hall, 800 Cushman Street from 11am to 12:30pm.
Led by Mayor Mindy O’Neall, the event will bring together behavioral health professionals, first responders, peer advocates, community organizations, and residents to recognize the importance of mental well-being in every aspect of community life.
“Mental health impacts public safety, housing, education, addiction, homelessness, family stability, and economic wellbeing,” said Mayor O’Neall. “This event is about recognizing the incredible work already happening in our community, while also acknowledging the gaps that still exist and the work ahead of us.”
The program will feature speakers from local crisis response and behavioral health organizations, including peer voices from individuals with lived experience. The City will also highlight collaborative efforts involving emergency services, community paramedics, crisis intervention providers, and local law enforcement. Tanana Chiefs Conference Chief, Sharon Hildebrand, will be a featured speaker as a key partner to addressing mental health wellbeing.
"Supporting mental wellness and creating safe spaces for open dialogue are essential to the health of Alaska Native people and our entire region," Chief Hildebrand said. "Together, we are building a stronger, more resilient community.”
The event is intended to reduce stigma, encourage community conversation, and strengthen partnerships that support residents facing mental health challenges.
Additional details, including speakers, schedule, and participating organizations, will be announced soon on www.fairbanks.gov/mentalhealth.
