The City of Fairbanks Public Works Department is dedicated to maintaining and improving the essential infrastructure and services that keep our community running safely and efficiently.
Our team is responsible for maintaining city streets, managing snow removal during Fairbanks’ challenging winters, maintaining storm drains and streetlights, and providing solid waste and facility maintenance services. From clearing roads after heavy snowfall to repairing potholes, collecting refuse, and ensuring City vehicles and equipment are ready for duty, Public Works is at the heart of keeping Fairbanks moving.
Public Works staff take pride in serving our community year-round, responding to changing weather conditions, and ensuring that City infrastructure remains safe, reliable, and accessible for all residents.
Summary of Services Provided
The City of Fairbanks Public Works Department manages more than 350 lane miles of roads and 30 miles of sidewalks, ensuring safe and accessible travel for residents year-round.
During the winter months, our crews focus on snow plowing and sanding to keep roadways clear and safe in challenging conditions. In the summer, efforts shift to street sweeping, pothole patching, storm drain maintenance, and road repairs to maintain smooth and reliable surfaces.
In addition to roadway upkeep, the Street Maintenance Division is also responsible for signage, streetlights, and the City’s storm drain system. Crews also perform brushing along roadways and rights-of-way to improve visibility, enhance safety, and maintain a clean, well-kept streetscape throughout the community.
The City of Fairbanks Public Works Department provides weekly garbage collection to more than 6,300 households, helping keep our community clean, safe, and environmentally responsible. Effective waste management is essential to maintaining public health and community appearance, and our goal is to deliver consistent, efficient service to every resident.
To ensure smooth collection for everyone, the City has established specific garbage collection requirements. These rules are designed to promote safety, efficiency, and compliance with local ordinances. Repeated non-compliance may result in additional charges, so residents are encouraged to review the Garbage Collection Requirements & Guidelines to ensure proper disposal practices.
Public Works also offers Special Collection Services for sharps/needles, ash, and hazardous materials such as cooking oils, paints, cleaning fluids, insecticides, solvents, acids, gasoline, and other toxic flammable wastes. Residents must schedule the pickup of specific items with Public Works before collection. These services are available at no extra charge. However, oversized items like furniture, brush, and appliances (excluding refrigerators, air conditioners or freezers) can be collected at an additional fee. Contact Public Works for current fee information or visit the Schedule of Fees and Charges for Services.
For questions, special pickups, or assistance with compliance, please contact the Public Works Department at (907) 459-6770.
