City of Fairbanks Public Works Department
The City of Fairbanks Public Works Department is dedicated to maintaining and improving the essential infrastructure and services that keep our community running safely and efficiently.
Our team is responsible for maintaining city streets, managing snow removal during Fairbanks’ challenging winters, maintaining storm drains and streetlights, and providing solid waste and facility maintenance services. From clearing roads after heavy snowfall to repairing potholes, collecting refuse, and ensuring City vehicles and equipment are ready for duty, Public Works is at the heart of keeping Fairbanks moving.
Public Works staff take pride in serving our community year-round, responding to changing weather conditions, and ensuring that City infrastructure remains safe, reliable, and accessible for all residents.
Services
The City of Fairbanks Public Works Department manages more than 350 lane miles of roads and 30 miles of sidewalks, ensuring safe and accessible travel for residents year-round.
During the winter months, our crews focus on snow plowing and sanding to keep roadways clear and safe in challenging conditions. In the summer, efforts shift to street sweeping, pothole patching, storm drain maintenance, and road repairs to maintain smooth and reliable surfaces.
In addition to roadway upkeep, the Street Maintenance Division is also responsible for signage, streetlights, and the City’s storm drain system. Crews also perform brushing along roadways and rights-of-way to improve visibility, enhance safety, and maintain a clean, well-kept streetscape throughout the community.
The City of Fairbanks Public Works Department provides weekly garbage collection to more than 6,300 households, helping keep our community clean, safe, and environmentally responsible. Effective waste management is essential to maintaining public health and community appearance, and our goal is to deliver consistent, efficient service to every resident.
To ensure smooth collection for everyone, the City has established specific garbage collection guidelines. These rules are designed to promote safety, efficiency, and compliance with local ordinances.
-
Collection Schedule: Trash is collected Monday through Wednesday between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Have your garbage curbside by 7:00 AM on your scheduled day to avoid disruption to your service.
-
Holiday Schedule: No collection on designated holidays. Service resumes the next workday.
-
Curbside Placement: Garbage must be visible, accessible, and free of obstructions such as vehicles or snow berms.
-
Weight Limit: Each bag must not exceed 40 pounds. Larger items (e.g., furniture or appliances) require scheduled pickup by contacting Public Works directly at (907) 459-6770.
-
Prohibited Items: Hazardous materials, construction debris, animal waste, medical waste, and maggot-infested trash will not be collected. Any prohibited items must be taken directly to the FNSB Landfill, located at 455 Sanduri Street.
-
Special Collection: Large items, brush, sharps containers, or appliances can be picked up by appointment on Thursdays at no extra charge when scheduled by the preceding Wednesday.
- Large Item Collections: Public Works offers large item collection services for residential customers at a rate of $105 per load. All items must be placed curbside for pickup, as crews are not permitted to enter private property. This ensures safety and efficiency for both residents and staff. Payment must be made in advance before scheduling your collection. Residents may pay by cash, credit or debit card, or charge the fee to their garbage bill (with a signed authorization from the property owner on record). To schedule a large item pickup or request additional information, please contact Public Works at (907) 459-6770.
Repeated non-compliance may result in additional charges, so residents are encouraged to review the full garbage collection requirements to ensure proper disposal.
For questions, special pickups, or assistance with compliance, please contact the City of Fairbanks Public Works Department at (907) 459-6770.
