The City of Fairbanks Public Works Department works diligently to keep our roads clear and safe during the winter months. Our snow removal schedule is carefully planned but is highly dependent on weather conditions and may change as necessary. We prioritize main roads, emergency routes, and key public areas to ensure that essential services can continue uninterrupted. Once these areas are cleared, our crews will focus on residential neighborhoods. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we adapt to the ever-changing Alaskan winter weather.
The City of Fairbanks Public Works Department posts neighborhoods with temporary signs reading (NO PARKING AFTER 7 AM). We do this for 2 important reasons:
- To make a safer work zone by removing vehicles and trailers in the city’s road right of way that can cause choke points. By eliminating the choke points and obstacles on the road, the city can avoid damaging city equipment and limit the possible damage to residents’ vehicles and trailers.
- Moving those parked obstacles allows Public Works to collect as much snow as possible and to smooth up the entire driving surface.
Posting procedures include the following:
- Public Works dayshift will place the signs out after 12 pm the prior day before snow removal is done on the streets. The schedule for snow removal is posted on the City of Fairbanks web site and is updated frequently as conditions change.
- Public Works will put reader boards and signs out for Island Homes, Walden Estates and Arctic Park. The reader boards will be put out 24 hours before snow removal and the signs will be placed out at least 12 hours before snow removal in those neighborhoods.
- Public Works will put out 4 signs per block being posted and then an extra sign by each vehicle that looks like it may need to be towed. Vehicles that may be towed are the vehicles that have several accumulations of snow falls indicating that they have not been moved in long period of time.
- When the block has been posted a picture of the block being posted will be taken for record purposes and another picture will be taken with an additional sign next to each vehicle that looks like a possible tow for documentation purposes.
- The signs will be removed when the grader operator is ready and about to remove the hard pack. Residents will need to wait until the snow crew is done removing the hard pack on that street before they return to park any vehicles on those streets previously posted for snow removal that day. The removal of hardpack can take several hours and multiple berms being set up by the graders to accomplish the snow removal goal for the street.
